Paul Hackett opened a strong club and Brigitte Mavromichalis showed five or more spades and 4-7 HCP with her 1ª bid after the overcall. The diamond fit was soon found, but the key to the successful auction was Brigitte’s forcing pass over 5©, encouraging Paul to go on to the slam. Bidding and making 6¨ was already going to be a pretty good score but when East doubled it got even better. +1540 was a huge score for North/South.

HACKETT TWINS LEAD QUALIFIERS

Former World Junior Team Champions, Jason and Justin Hackett led the qualifiers to the Championship Open Pairs Final, which will be held over two sessions today. They finished almost 2% clear of Charles Williams and Hamar Dayes of Jamaica. There is a carry-forward from the qualifying stage which gives the leaders a start equivalent to two tops in the final over the last placed qualifiers.
