HACKETTS WIN OPEN PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP!
Jason and Justin Hackett won the Open Pairs Championship by just over three matchpoints from their teammates, Haig Tchamitch and Brian Senior on Sunday. Third were the Trinidad pairing of Roger Mapp and Mohan Seepersad.
The Consolation Pairs was won by Jorge Barrera and Santiago Londono of Colombia.
FORMAT OF TEAMS EVENTS
The National Open Teams has seven teams. They will play a double round robin with one bye round. The winners of the round robin can choose from the third and fourth placed teams as their semi-final opponents with the second placed team playing the other qualifiers. The semi-finals are over 48 boards and the final over 80.
The National Ladies Teams has the same format throughout except that, with only six teams, everyone gets the Wednesday 4.15 pm session off.
There are 15 Open teams. They play a complete round robin including a bye round then 32-board semi-finals and a 64-board final. Again, the winners of the round robin can choose between third and fourth as their semi-final opponents.
The Open Pairs Championship
There is always an extra edge to the bridge when teammates meet in a Pairs game and in Sunday’s Open Pairs final two pairs of teammates were to finish first and second overall. This is what happened on those three boards when Justin and Jason Hackett met Brian Senior and Haig Tchamitch.

Senior won in dummy and led a spade to the nine, king and ace and back came a second club. Senior won in dummy and had to play the winning diamonds next to get rid of his losing clubs. Jason ruffed in on the third diamond but Senior pitched his last club anyway and was one down for –100.That was 9 MPs out of 17 to Senior/Tchamitch.

Jason opened the West hand with 1
© and was left to play there. Senior led two top clubs and Jason ruffed and led out three rounds of hearts. Senior won the third round and switched to the ¨ K, ducked, then played a club to the jack, queen and ruff. Jason exited with ace and jack of diamonds so Senior could cash the fourth diamond before having to switch to a spade. Tchamitch still had a trump to come but the two spade tricks gave Jason his contract; +80 and 11 MPs for the Hacketts.|

Justin led a top spade and switched to a club, won in dummy. Senior played ace of diamonds then the
¨ 10 to the king and Jason played back a second club, again won in dummy. Senior tried three rounds of hearts, ruffing, a diamond to the queen and a fourth heart, ruffed, but did not have the communications to take both the fourth club and long heart so had to give up a spade at the end, making +130.That was worth 10 MPs to Senior/Tchamitch. Over the three boards, Justin and Jason gained 26 MPs to 25.
They went on to win the event by 3.02 MPs.
